US size G hook used for a 5 inch square
US size H hook used for a 5 1/4 inch square
Abbreviations: ch = chain, dc = double crochet, ea = each, hdc = half double crochet, sc = single crochet, sp = space
Starting chain: chain 14.
Row 1: (work in one loop of each chain to leave a remaining loop that will be used when doing the outside round), sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea ch across. (13 sc)
Row 2: ch 1 to turn, sc in first sc, *skip next 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc (shell made), skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc **, repeat the directions between * and ** once more.
Row 4: ch 1, sc in first dc, * hdc in next dc, dc in ea of next 3 stitches, hdc in next dc, sc in next dc **, repeat the directions between * and ** once more.
Row 6: ch 1 to turn, sc in ea of first 3 hdc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in ea of next 5 hdc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in ea of last 3 hdc. (13 sc)
Row 8: Repeat row 3.
Row 9: Repeat row 4.
Outside Round 1: ch 1, then working down the side of the square, sc in edge of first row on that side, 2 sc around post of dc on edge of next row, sc around edge sc on ea of next 2 rows, 2 sc around post of hdc on edge of next row, sc around edge sc on next row, 2 sc around post of dc on edge of next row, sc around edge sc on ea of next 2 rows, ch 2, then working along next side of square, sc in remaining loop by ea sc across this side,
End off. Weave in ends.
