Shell Center Square, Worked in Two Colors

Crochet Pattern for Afghan Square
An 11 inch square (or add two more single crochet rounds for a 12 inch square)

This crocheted afghan square has a center of shell stitches, with rounds of shells and double crochet to complete the design. In the example above, I used Simply Soft Tweed yarn, color white, for the center and Simply Soft color sage for the rounds. I also used the white tweed in the v-stitch outside round.

With the holes that give the look of lines radiating out from the center, using a lighter color for the center gives the illusion of depth to the square (focus your eyes on the white center and it appears as though the center is farther away than the sides, as if it's the far wall in a room or the end of a tunnel, although the entire square is actually all on the same level).
