The Charted Patterns For the CarrotRabbitghan:
On the completed filet crochet piece, work one round of single crochet (in the same color used to make the piece), with 2 sc around the post of ea dc on the edge of ea row along the sides and an sc in ea sc across the top and bottom. Each time that you come to a corner, make a chain-2 to go around the corner. Help Link: How to sc around dc post
On the rabbit pieces, continue with the same color used to make the rabbit pieces. On the carrot piece, end off carrot color and attach color used to make the rabbit pieces (I used color Aran), attaching the yarn in the first sc on the top row of the piece. Follow directions below for the outside granny-style rounds.
Outside Granny Round 1: This is a guideline, geared for the size of the rabbit and carrot charts with one sc round added. You can easily adapt this to go around other sizes of filet crochet pieces. Guideline Instructions: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in ea of next 2 sc, (ch 2, skip next 2 sc, dc in ea of next 3 sc) 6 times across the top edge, then for corner: ch 5, then working down the next long side, dc in ch-2 corner chain, dc in ea of next 2 sc, (ch 2, skip next 2 sc, dc in ea of next 3 sc) 12 times along that edge (last dc is made in the ch-2 corner chain), for next corner: ch 5, then working the bottom edge, skip 1 sc, dc in ea of next 3 sc, (ch 2, skip next 2 sc, dc in ea of next 3 sc) 6 times across the bottom edge, then for corner: ch 5, then working along next long side, skip 2 sc, dc in ea of next 3 sc, (ch 2, skip next 2 sc, dc in ea of next 3 sc) 11 times along the long edge, then for corner: ch 5, then skip next sc and the ch-2 corner, slip stitch in the first dc of this round.
Outside Granny Round 2: sl st in ea of next 2 dc (to reach the first ch-2 space), sl st in the ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), make 2 more dc in same ch-2 sp, (ch 2, skip next 3 dc, make 3 dc in next ch-2 sp) 5 times, then make (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) all in the ch-5 corner sp. Continue in this same pattern around, with 3 dc in ea chain-2 space, chain 2, skip 3 dc. Each time that you come to a chain-5 corner, make (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in that chain-5 space. After working in the last chain-5 corner, make 2 chains and then slip stitch in the top of the chain-3 that started the round.
Outside Granny Round 3: sl st in ea of next 2 dc (to reach the next ch-2 space), sl st in the ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), make 2 more dc in same ch-2 sp, (ch 2, skip next 3 dc, make 3 dc in next ch-2 sp) 5 times, then make (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) all in the ch-3 corner sp. Continue in this same pattern around, with 3 dc in ea chain-2 space, chain 2, skip 3 dc. Each time that you come to a chain-3 corner, make (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in that chain-3 space. After working in the last chain-3 corner, make 2 chains and then slip stitch in the top of the chain-3 that started the round. End off with this color.
Next Round in SC: With the same color used to crochet the carrot piece, work one round of single crochet. After attaching the yarn, make one chain to begin, then make an sc in ea dc and 2 sc in ea ch-2 sp. Each time that you come to a chain-3 corner, make (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in the ch-2 corner space. At the end of the round, slip stitch in the first sc of the round. End off with this color.
Joining the Pieces: Arrange the 3 pieces so that each rabbit is facing the carrot. Turn one rabbit piece over to place one of the rabbit pieces on the carrot piece (with the right sides of the two pieces facing each other). Determine which long side you need to join so that the seam is the seam which the rabbit is facing toward (so that, when the pieces are unfolded after joining, the rabbit will still be facing the carrot). Attach the carrot color of yarn in the first sc on the right-hand end of the long side that will be joined. Working through both pieces at the same time, slip stitch together with a crochet hook (or sew together with a large-eye yarn needle, if you prefer that method of joining). Repeat this with the other rabbit piece, joining to the other long edge of the carrot piece. Help Link: Methods for Joining, Illustrated
Additional Outside Rounds: With the carrot color, make a round in single crochet around the outside edge of the new bigger piece made of the joined pieces. Then make a round of single crochet with the green used in the surface crochet around the leafy top of the carrot. Continue with any number of additional rounds that you desire. I made the next round as a granny-style round in the example (in the same manner as before), ending with a round of single crochet.
This results in a small afghan that is wider than tall. If you want to make it taller, one idea is to add granny-style rows along the top and along the bottom edges until you have the size you want, ending with a single crochet round to finish it.
Making as a Decorative Picture: If this design is made with thread, it could be a decorative wallhanging or banner. One possibility for materials would be size 10 thread, with a size 7 or 8 steel hook. You could crochet tabs and sew them across the top, to insert a wooden dowel through, for hanging the finished piece up. Example instructions for crocheting banner tabs can be read in the following free patterns: Leprechaun Hat Banner, Fantasy Bat Banner
