This photo shows an example of this design with a chains spider web added in one corner and white cross-stitch added over the bat to make it stand out a bit more, along with straight embroidery stitch outlining around the bat and around the eyes in Caron Simply Soft lime green (yarn color named Limelight). This charted design could be crocheted for a banner or used as the front for a Halloween candy bag. The example shown is just one possible color combination that could be used.
In this example, I used Red Heart Super Saver color Zebra for the night sky background and Red Heart Super Saver color Amethyst (a medium purple) for the ghost. I crocheted the bat in the Zebra background color. I also added an embroidery straight stitch outlining in white yarn to just the right hand side edge of the ghost (for the look of moonlight reflecting on that one side).
The spider web is made with crocheted chains and doesn't need to be any certain pattern. I began by attaching Simply Soft color Limelight on the top edge of the piece and making a number of crocheted chains to reach loosely to a few rows down on the left-hand edge. Slip stitch in one loop of the edge, chain a few more, then slip stitch a little further down on the same edge, then make more chains (exact number is not important; do what looks right to you), slip stitch or single crochet in the chain loop above. Make more chains to reach the top edge again; continue in this manner until you have the size and shape of spider web that you want (refer to photo above for an example of one possible shape).
After adding the spider web, I added two rows around the outside edge of the whole piece, in the same purple color used for the ghost, using single crochet, with a chain-2 on the corners.
