A Free Crochet Pattern for Sweet Potato Squared Baby Hat
This simple crochet baby hat doesn’t require any shaping (increasing or decreasing) techniques. The open stitch pattern makes it a perfect choice for Spring, Summer, or Fall baby wear.

Materials
Yarn: Knit Picks, Comfy Worsted [75% pima cotton/25% acrylic; 109 yards; 50 grams; worsted weight]
Main Color: 1 skein “Sweet Potato”
Coordinating Color: 1 skein “Sea Foam”
Any worsted weight yarn can be substituted for this project. A machine washable fiber is always highly recommended for baby items. Check the yarn label for care instructions before purchasing. You’ll need approximately 55 (66, 77, 88) yards or 25 (30, 35, 40) grams in your yarn of choice.
Crochet Hook: US size H/5mm hook
Adjust hook sizes as necessary to achieve gauge listed below.
Extras: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge: 12 sc and 20 rows = 4” using size H/5mm hook.
Finished Measurements: 10 (12, 14, 16)” circumference.
To Fit: Head size up to 12 (14, 16, 18)” circumference, or ages Preemie 1 (Preemie 2/Newborn, Baby, Toddler)

Baby Hat Pattern
Using mc, ch 30 (36, 42, 48). Sl st in 1st ch to form ring.
Foundation Rnd: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st to beg ch to end -- 30 (36, 42, 48) sc.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in same st, sk next sc, *2 dc in next st, sk next sc; rep from * to around, sl st to top of beg ch to end -- (30 (36, 42, 48) dc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to beg ch to end -- 30 (36, 42, 48) sc.
*Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until piece measures 3 (3.5, 4, 4.75, 5), or 1.75” shorter than desired length.
Change to cc yarn.
Next Rnd: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to beg ch to end -- 30 (36, 42, 48) sc.
Change to mc yarn.
Edging Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to beg ch to end -- 30 (36, 42, 48) sc.
Edging Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, dc in next 2 sts, *dc in next 3 sts, ch 1, sk next st, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * around, sl st in top of beg ch to end -- 25 (30, 35, 40) dc.
Edging Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in next 2 sts, (yo, pull up a loop) 4 times into next ch-1 sp, yo and pull through all 9 loops on hook, dc in next 2 sts; *dc in next 3 sts, (yo, pull up a loop) 4 times into next ch-1 sp, yo and pull through all 9 loops on hook, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * to end.
Edging Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to beg ch to end -- 30 (36, 42, 48) sc.
Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
Finishing
Hold hat with foundation ch edge on top. With cc yarn, single crochet through doubled fabric to hold top of hat together. This produces a squared off top to the hat.
