Downhill Skier

This easy ski hat pattern makes a perfect weekend project or last minute gift idea. If you’re new to crocheting it’s also a great introduction to hat making! The Downhill Skier pattern is worked using a super bulky yarn, a large hook, and basic crochet stitches. Since it’s crocheted flat (in rows) from side to side you’ll be able to achieve the perfect fit.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials
Yarn:
2 (2, 3, 3) skeins Loops & Threads, Dewdrops [51% acrylic / 18% mohair / 18% polyamide / 8% polyester / 5% payette; 71 yards; super bulky weight]

To substitute yarn look for a super bulky weight (#6) yarn in your favorite fiber.

Crochet Hook:
US size P/11.5mm crochet hook
Adjust hook sizes as necessary to achieve gauge listed below.

Extras:
Tapestry needle for weaving ends

Gauge:
4 half double crochet = 2” using size P/11.5mm hook.

Finished Measurements:
10 (10, 12, 12)” length
14 (16, 18, 20)” circumference - Shown in size 20” on model with 21” head circumference.

Crochet Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
* = a repeat in the pattern
ch = chain
hdc = half double crochet
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)

Hat Pattern
Ch 21 (21, 25, 25), sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch to end, turn -- 20 (20, 24, 24) sc.

Row 1: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn -- 20 (20, 24, 24) hdc.

Repeat this row until piece measures 14 (16, 18, 20)” from beginning, or until piece measures desired length (this length is the circumference of your hat).

Last Row: Fold your piece so the long edges are aligned. Ch 1, sl st through next st working through both edges of fabric to hold piece together. Continue from * across next 19 (19, 23, 23) sts.

Fasten off.

Edging
Attach yarn to one short, open end. Work 28 (32, 36, 40) sc sts evenly spaced around opening. Use the method of 2 sts per inch to evenly space your sc.

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Cut a length of yarn about 24” long. Lace this piece of yarn through the sts 1.5 (1.5, 2, 2)” below unedged opening. Pull yarn tight to create a gathered “pompom” effect and tie off as desired. (Sample was tied in a tight bow.)
