Everyday Crocheted Slouch Hat – A Simple Crochet Project

Wear this easy crocheted hat every day. Make it your own by adding embellishments such a buttons and pins to the forehead brim.

Project Description:

This simple slouch hat will fulfill your every day hat needs and makes for a perfect weekend project. Pair it with a simple jeans and t-shirt outfit for a hip and fun look. Make the hat funky by adding crocheted embellishments like crochet flowers or even some fake craft flowers or buttons to adorn one side of the forehead band.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials
Yarn:
Cascade Yarns Eco + [100% Peruvian Wool; 478 yards; 250 grams; Aran weight], Color #0958.
1 skein for each size.

If you wish to make substitutions, look for a heavy worsted or aran weight yarn. Yarns containing at least a 50% wool or acrylic content will work best for hats.


Crochet Hook:
US H/5mm hook,
US J/6mm hook,
Adjust hook sizes as necessary to achieve gauge listed below.

Extras:
Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge:
16 slip stitches and 32 rounds = 4 square inches using size H/5mm hook.
14 half double crochet and 12 rounds = 4 square inches using size J/6mm hook.
(Stitch gauge is more important than row gauge for this project.)

Finished Measurements:
Bottom (forehead) circumference: 16 (18, 20, 22) inches.

To Fit Sizes:
child (teen, adult small, adult medium) — photos show 20” adult size on model with 22” head circumference.

Crochet Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
* = a repeat in the pattern
CC = coordinating color yarn
ch = chain
hdc = half double crochet
MC = main color yarn
rep = repeat
rnd = round
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
sp = space
st(s) = stitch(es)
tbl = through back loop
tog = together

 

Pattern Notes
Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes within parenthesis. If only one number appears it applies to all sizes.

When slipping stitches for Round 2 of Forehead Section make sure to insert hook through only the back loop of the stitch you are working through. Doing this is what gives the woven appearance of the stitch.

The chain stitch at the beginning of every round counts as the first single or half double crochet for that round. Remember this when counting stitches at the end of every round.

The final decrease round of every size skips the initial chain stitch. This was done intentionally.


Hat Instructions

Forehead Section
Using smaller hook, ch 64 (72, 80, 88) loosely, sl st in first ch to form loop.

Round 1: Ch 1, sl st in next 63 (71, 79, 87) ch, sl st into first ch to end rnd – 64 (72, 80, 88) sts.

Round 2: Ch 1, sl st in next 63 (71, 79, 87) sl sts, sl st into first ch to end rnd – 64 (72, 80, 88) sts.
*Repeat Round 2 until piece measures 1 (1, 1.5, 1.5) inches.


Main Body of Hat
Change to larger hook.

Round 1: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc tbl in each of the next 63 (71, 79, 87) sl sts, sl st into first ch to end rnd – 64 (72, 80, 88) sc total.

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc tbl in next 63 (71, 79, 87) sts, sl st into first ch to end rnd – 64 (72, 80, 88) hdc sts total.
*Repeat Round 2 until piece measures 6 (6, 7, 7.5) inches from bottom edge. 

Crown Decrease Section
Round 1: Ch 1 (counts as first hdc), hdc tbl in next 5 (6, 7, 8) sts, hdc 2 tog, *hdc tbl in next 6 (7, 8, 9) sts, hdc 2 tog; rep from * another 6 times, sl st into first ch to end rnd – 56 (64, 72, 80) sts remain.

Round 2: Ch 1 (counts as first hdc), hdc tbl in next 4 (5, 6, 7) sts, hdc 2 tog, *hdc tbl in next 5 (6, 7, 8) sts, hdc 2 tog; rep from * another 6 times, sl st into first ch to end rnd – 48 (56, 64, 72) sts remain.

Round 3: Ch 1 (counts as first hdc), hdc tbl in next 3 (4, 5, 6) sts, hdc 2 tog, *hdc tbl in next 4 (5, 6, 7) sts, hdc 2 tog; rep from * another 6 times, sl st into first ch to end rnd – 40 (48, 56, 64) sts remain.

Round 4: Ch 1 (counts as first hdc), hdc tbl in next 2 (3, 4, 5) sts, hdc 2 tog, *hdc tbl in next 3 (4, 5, 6) sts, hdc 2 tog; rep from * another 6 times, sl st into first ch to end rnd – 32 (40, 48, 56) sts remain.

Round 5: Ch 1 (counts as first hdc), hdc tbl in next 1 (2, 3, 4) sts, hdc 2 tog, *hdc tbl in next 2 (3, 4, 5) sts, hdc 2 tog; rep from * another 6 times, sl st into first ch to end rnd – 24 (32, 40, 48) sts remain.
