This all-purpose granny square design can be used for crocheting afghans, baby blankets, or any other project that utilizes crocheted squares. Make as many squares as you need, and piece them together to create your finished project.

This version of the granny square is made using V-stitches. It's similar to traditional granny squares, but If you're bored with regular grannies, this one is a nice change of pace.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials:

  • Yarn, thread or fiber of your choice
  • Crochet hook of appropriate size
  • Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern:

  • beg = beginning
  • ch = chain
  • ch-2 sp = chain-2 space, the space created by working 2 chain stitches
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st = stitch
  • v-st = V-Stitch

Special Stitch Needed for This Pattern:

V-Stitch: Dc, ch 1, dc, all worked in the same space.

Design Notes:

  • The first 3 chs of each round count as 1 dc.
  • Ch #4 in each round counts as the ch in between V-stitches.

Project Instructions:

Ch 6, sl st to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 4. Dc in ring. (Ch 2, Work 1 V-st in ring.) Repeat sequence in parentheses 2 more times. Ch 2, sl st to join to third ch st formed at the beg of the round. Work 1 more sl st in between the "V" of the first V-st formed.

Round 2: Ch 4, dc in same V-st, (2 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, V-st in next V-st) Repeat sequence in parentheses 2 more times. 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, sl st to join to third ch st formed at the beg of the round. Work another sl st in between the "V" of the first V-st formed.

Round 3: Ch 4, dc in same v-st, (ch 2, 2 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 more dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 2, v-st in next v-st) repeat sequence in parentheses 2 more times, ch 2, 2 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 more dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st to join to third ch st formed at the beg of the round., work 1 sl st in between the "V" of the first V-st formed, work 1 more sl st into next ch-2 sp.

Round 4: Ch 4, dc in same ch-2 sp, (ch 2, 2 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 more dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 2, v-st in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, v-st in next ch-2 sp) repeat sequence in parentheses 2 more times, ch 2, 2 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 more dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 2, v-st in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st to join to third ch st formed at the beg of the round., work 1 more sl st in between the "V" of the first V-st formed.

Round 5: Ch 4, dc in same v-st, (ch 2, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc sts, 2 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 more dc in same ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc sts, ch 2, v-st in next v-st, ch 2, v-st in next v-st) repeat sequence in parentheses 2 more times, ch 2, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc sts, 2 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, 2 more dc in same ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc sts, ch 2, v-st in next v-st, ch 2, sl st to join to third ch st formed at the beg of the round., work 1 more sl st in between the "V" of the first V-st formed.

End off. Block if desired. Use the granny square in the project of your choice.
