My checkered diamond filet crochet pattern tiles seamlessly, so you can repeat it out over and over to create a bedspread as large as you want.

After you've crocheted the main part of the bedspread, you'll want to add a pretty border too.

As far as bedspreads go, about the easiest idea I can think of is to use a simple granny square pattern as the basis for your design. The first step: crochet a bunch of squares using the granny square pattern of your choice. Then you would join them using whip stitch or another joining technique to create the main body of your bedspread. At the end, you'd add a gorgeous edging to complete the look.

This little granny (pictured at left) is a bit different than many of the granny square designs you see around. The motif in the center resembles a cross, hence the name. I think this square is best-suited to making bedspreads, but you're welcome to use it for other purposes too.

Here we have a simpler granny square design, known as "the summer bedspread granny square." This is a nice pattern for crocheting bedspreads intended for use during warm weather.

You might also wish to crochet basic granny squares using crochet thread to create a bedspread or coverlet.

These two patterns are similar, but there are important differences between them. Wondering what's the differences are? See a comparison: the summer bedspread granny square vs the basic granny square.

Filet Crochet Diamond Design

I originally designed this diamond pattern for use with the tapestry crochet technique. On a whim, I decided to try it in filet crochet too. I think the results are lovely, and I imagine this square would be a beautiful bedspread component.

If you're adventurous enough to try crocheting an entire bedspread using different patterned squares, I invite you to take a look at my mix and match series of designs. These are all square patterns that coordinate; they were designed to be used together. This diamond square is one of the designs in the series. You could use as few or as many of the squares as you want to in order to customize your own unique bedspread design.
