Abbreviations: ch = chain, sc = single crochet

Beginners are sometimes unsure exactly what is meant by the direction "sc in 2nd ch from hook", wondering if that includes the loop on the hook or if the counting is started beyond that. The answer is that the loop already on the hook is not counted. The top part of the photo above shows which chain is considered the first chain and which is the "second chain from the hook" (which is the chain to begin the first stitch in, when beginning to crochet the first row in the starting chain).

The lower part of the photo shows the start of the first single crochet being made in the second chain from the hook.
