Abbreviations: ch = chain, dc = double crochet, sc = single crochet, sp = space
The photo above can be helpful in understanding the meaning of crochet abbreviations, as well as learning some basic techniques used in crocheting. The row shown above is part of my Beginner Afghan Square pattern. By studying this photo, you can see how a "skipped stitch" looks, along with the pattern direction saying to "double crochet in each of next 5 single crochet" (marked on the photo as "sc in ea of next 5 sc"). Another part of the row shows "2 dc in ch-2 sp", which unabbreviated is "2 double crochet in chain-2 space", made by wrapping the yarn over the hook to begin a double crochet, then inserting the hook in the space below the chain-2 and proceeding to make the double crochet stitch (which results in the stitch being crocheted around the chain).
