How to Make a Crochet Starting Chain

Step 1: The photo above illustrates how to make the first circle in making a loop. (You can wrap it around your finger to make this circle.) Note that you should leave a length of about 6 inches or so on the other side of the circle (this will be left hanging as you crochet and will be woven in when you are finished crocheting the piece.) Weaving in this length is a good way to secure the end so that it will not unravel over time.

A crocheted starting chain (sometimes called a foundation chain) is used to begin crochet patterns. Chains are also often used within rows or rounds as part of crochet designs. Learning how to make a crocheted chain is the first step in learning how to crochet.
