Grasp your hook in your right hand, between your thumb, index finger and middle finger. Use the same type of tension that you would use to hold a pen; your fingers should be relaxed enough to move freely, but they should grip tightly enough to maintain precise control over the hook. To start, keep the hook facing upward.

Step 1: Insert the crochet hook between your index finger and the yarn. You can insert it either from left to right or from right to left. The photo shows the hook being inserted from right to left.
