The photo above shows an edging that could be used on the Make Any Size Oval. The photo shows ten rounds worked of the pattern with the addition of the Last Round and the Basic Shells Edging. This size oval could be nice as a placemat when made with cotton worsted weight yarn. Following are my instructions for working a basic shell edging around the oval.

Basic Shells Edging: ch 1, * sc in next sc, ch 1, skip 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, ch 1, skip 2 sc **, repeat the directions between * and ** as many times as needed until you have reached the first shell of the three shells on the rounded end, then *** 2 sc in next sc, ch 1, skip 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, ch 1, skip 2 sc ****, repeat the directions between *** and **** as many times as needed until you have reached to about the end of the third shell of the three shells on the rounded end, then repeat all the directions between * and **** to go around the rest of the piece. When you reach the end of this round, sl st in the beginning sc of this round.
