Country Plaid Placemat

This crochet placemat pattern would make the perfect accessory for the country kitchen. Play with color combinations to reflect your decor.

If a crochet placemat isn't your style you can easily use this pattern as written for a large dishcloth instead. Make certain to use a 100% cotton yarn like the one suggested for absorbency.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials
Yarn:
Lily Sugar’n Cream [100% cotton; 120 yards; 70.9 grams; worsted weight]
Main Color: 2 skeins Soft Ecru #01004
Coordinating Color: 1 skein Stonewash #01118

For a set of 2 placemats using Lily Sugar’n Cream you will need 3 skeins of your main color and 1 skein of your coordinating color.

If you wish to make substitutions, look for a 100% worsted weight cotton to retain the overall look at style of the design. Choosing another fiber will work, however, keep in mind that this piece is intended for the kitchen. You’ll want to make sure any fiber you choose is machine washable for easy care.

You will need 170 yards (100 grams) or yarn for each placemat. Remember to multiply this amount by however many placemats you wish to make.

US H/5mm crochet hook
Adjust hook sizes as necessary to achieve gauge listed below.

Extras:
Tapestry needle

Gauge:

Pattern Notes
Placemat is constructed by working a double crochet mesh fabric and weaving yarn lengthwise through it to create a woven plaid effect.

Crochet Placemat Pattern
Using mc yarn, ch 48 loosely.

Foundation Row: Dc in 6th ch from hook, *ch 1, sk next ch, dc in next ch; rep from * to end.

Double Crochet Mesh: Ch 4 (counts as 1st dc and ch 1), sk 1st dc and ch-1 sp, *dc in next dc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp; rep from * 21 times, ending with 1 dc in top of previous turning ch -- 23 dc.

Repeat Double Crochet Mesh Row once more.

Change to cc yarn and work Double Crochet Mesh Row twice.

Change to mc yarn and work Double Crochet Mesh Row until piece measures 17” or desired length from beginning.

Using mc yarn, work sc around entire circumference of placemat to create an even look to the edges.

Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

Weaving
Cut 57 pieces on mc yarn measuring 26” length.

Cut 9 pieces cc yarn measuring 26” length.

Holding 3 matching pieces of yarn together, weave length wise with mc in first 3 rows of mesh, then with cc in next 3 rows of mesh, and lastly with mc again in the remaining rows.

Secure woven yarn at short ends (width) of placemat to make fringe. Trim ends so that both sides are even.
