    (chain 5, slip stitch in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in each of next 3 chains, slip stitch in center) twice.
    Added Explanation: In this case, the ( ) indicates a set of crochet directions which are to be repeated. You will do the directions between ( ), then do the same directions between ( ) again.
    This part of the directions forms the ties of the bow. It begins with a chain 5, then a slip stitch in the 2nd chain from the hook (do not count the chain that is already on the hook when determining which chain is the 2nd chain from the hook). Next, slip stitch in each of the next 3 chains, then slip stitch back into the spot which was previously indicated to be the center. This makes one tie ... repeat the directions between the parenthesis ( ) to form the 2nd tie.

    End off, leaving the 5 inch long strand to use to sew the bow to the item.
