Materials: Thread - I crocheted an example with size 10 crochet thread and US steel crochet hook size 8 for an edging about 1 3/4 inches wide on the top part (not counting fringe portion) - fringe part can be made in whatever length you want
Yarn - and another example with worsted weight yarn and a US size G hook for an edging about 4 1/2 inches wide on the top part (not counting fringe portion) - fringe part can be made in whatever length you want by making more (or fewer) chains when crocheting each fringe.
Use any thread size or yarn weight of your choice (substitute hook size to correspond with size of thread or yarn you're using)
Starting Chain: Chain 17 (the 1917 instructions said to chain 22 for the starting chain, but I found that 17 chains works out better).
Row 1: 4 dc in the 4th chain from the hook, ch 2, 1 dc in the same place as the 4 dc just made, ch 3, skip 4 chains, make a shell of 6 dc in next ch, ch 3, skip 4 chains, 1 dc in next ch, ch 2, skip 2 chains, 1 dc in last ch.
