sp = space

Row 3: ch 3, 4 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, 1 dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 3, 6 dc between 3rd and 4th posts of 6-dc shell (in same manner as before), ch 3, skip next 3 dc of 6-dc shell of previous row, skip ch-3 sp, dc in next dc, ch 2, skip 2 chains, dc in next ch.
Repeat Rows: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 as many times as needed to reach the length that you want for your edging.

Fringe: Slip stitch in the end chain space (see vintage photo for placement of fringe) and make a chain that is twice as long as the length you want for the fringe then sc in same place as slip stitch just made. Make another fringe of same number of chains and sc in same chain space as last sc. Slip stitch in next chain space. Make two fringe in each chain space across, in same manner.

The 1917 pattern called for a fringe made of 100 chains for a thread crocheted edging. Unless you are going for the look of very, very long fringe, 100 chains will be too much if you are using worsted weight yarn, though. And even with thread, you may sometimes want a shorter fringe. The number of chains that you use for each fringe will depend upon the type of materials you are crocheting with and the finished look that you want. Fringe can be many different lengths ... use your own judgement in deciding upon the number of chains that you want to use in the fringe for your particular edging.
