This scarf combines my boxed shell variation with rows of crochet shells.

Abbreviations: ch = chain, dc = double crochet, ea = each, sc = single crochet, sp = space, st = stitch, sts = stitches,

Materials: about 3 oz. worsted weight yarn, US size H hook

Pattern Note: You will turn at the end of each row.

Make 2 pieces. These will be joined at the center of the scarf. The reason for having two pieces is so that the shells will be right side up on both scarf ends.

If you have just completed the first piece, end off. Weave in ends. Make second piece.
After Completing Row 81 of Second Piece, Do This Joining: Holding the short ends together of both scarf pieces (with the right sides facing each other), slip stitch across the ends, to join, working through both loops of the last row made and, at the same time, working through both loops of the sc row on the other short end, for each slip stitch. Do not end off but continue with the Outside Round.

Outside Round: ch 3, sc around post of dc on edge of next row. Repeat this as many times as needed to reach the end. Note that when you are working in the section that is the Boxed Shell design, where there are single crochet rows on every third row, you will skip the sc row ends and still keep to the same pattern of ch 3, sc around post of dc on edge of next row.
Working Across Short End: sc in remaining loop of first ch, * skip next ch, sc in next ch **, repeat the directions between * and ** 7 times, ch 3, sc in end of sc row on next side, then (ch 3, sc around post of dc on edge of next row) as many times as needed until you reach the center of the scarf where the two pieces were joined. After the ch-3 closest to that spot, sc in the center row of the scarf, then continue with (ch 3, sc around post of dc on edge of next row) as many times as needed along the long side to reach the next end. Work across the next short end the same way as first short end, then continue along the next long side until you reach the beginning of the Outside Round, ending with a slip stitch in the base of the first ch-3 of this round.
End off, leaving a strand for weaving in. Weave in the ends, to secure.
