A base wristband is crocheted, with surface rows added to make a bumpy design in a second color. This funky look might especially appeal to teens and kids.

There are various definitions applied to the word funky but the one that applies to this wristband pattern is the definition "stylish and modern in an unconventional way".

Materials: any worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors (cotton yarn is best if for hot weather summer use or any fiber for other times of year): color A (I used white), color B (I used a multicolor with bright colors)
size US H crochet hook

All Base Wristband rows are worked in the back loop only, which is important to give stretch to the piece.

Base Starting Chain: Chain 16.
Base Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc in ea ch across. (15 sc)
Rows 2 - 22: ch 1 to turn, sc in back loop only of ea sc across. (15 sc)
Note: 22 row size fits average teen or ladies wrist (and will fit over the hand with the available stretch). Make fewer rows to fit a smaller wrist or more rows for a larger wrist.

Surface Rows -

Attach color B in the remaining loop of the first sc of the second row of the Base Wristband. Chain 1, then begin Surface Row 1.

Work in one loop only of each stitch (the remaining loops) for all surface rows.

Surface Row 1: (working in remaining loop of each sc) sc in first sc, ch 2, skip next 2 sc, (sc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, sc) all in next sc, ch 2, skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc, (sc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, sc) all in next sc, sc in next sc, ch 2, skip next 2 sc, (sc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, sc) all in next sc, ch 2, skip next 2 sc, sc in last sc, ch 4, then rotate the piece (so that the row you just worked in is now upside down) and the piece is in position ready to work the next row that has remaining loops showing.

Surface Row 2: Skip next sc row (no remaining loops show on that row), then repeat Surface Row 1 directions across remaining loops of next row.

Note about rows 3 - 10: If you made fewer than 22 base rows for a smaller fit, you will probably have less than 10 surface rows to do and if you made more than 22 base rows, you will probably have more than 10 surface rows to do. After doing the last surface row that you are making, do the final ch-4 as directed for the end of row 10 instructions.

Rows 3 - 10: Repeat Surface Row 2. At the end of Row 10, ch 4 (this chain-4 will be joined to first sc of Surface Rows after base wristband short ends are joined). End off.

Fold Base piece in half, with the right sides together, lining up the two short edges. Slip stitch in one loop of each stitch across the edge, working through both of the two short edges at the same time, to join. End off. Weave in ends. Turn right side out.

Sew end of last ch-4 of Surface Row 10 to the first sc of Surface Row 1. Weave in ends.
