What Types of Items Do You Crochet for Charity?
I crochet pink scarves to give to Breast cancer Survivors in my area. So far I have made and given away 37, I started doing this almost a year ago. I will make and send by snail mail if I have the name and address of the survivor, in fact I did one that went to Maryland and one to Oregon.
I can always use yarn if anyone cares to donate to the cause. Will provide my address on request.
Which Organization(s) Do You Donate Crocheted Items To?
I do not donate the items to any Organization, just get all my referrals by word of mouth. If a chapter in this area is interested in what I am doing I would be happy to work with them. I am in the Newton, Iowa area. Also if any of you readers know someone who is a survivor I would be glad to make and send them a scarf. I also can knit if anyone prefers one that is knitted. My mother died from Breast Cancer in 1981 and I battled and won the disease in 1992. People I meet give me names of others they meet or know who have battled breast cancer or have family or friends that have had this dreaded disease. I have arthritis so sometimes it takes me a while to finish a scarf but If I am given a name I try to get one made within 2 weeks. I have 20 patterns that I work from so they aren't all alike. Some are pretty fancy and others plain.
Advice
- I do not have any advice to anyone other than always get your Mammograms.
Have Your Experiences All Been Positive?
I would see yes, I had one lady cry when I presented a scarf to her, she said no one had ever done anything for her.
Are There Any Pitfalls to Be Aware of?
not sure about that. Sometimes a person will give you a name and you find out they have not had breast cancer, that the person who gave you the name was hoping you would give them the scarf.
Which Yarn(s) Do You Use When Crocheting for Charity?
I like the Bernat baby yarn but have worked with whatever pink yarn i could find. I only have Walmart here to buy from but sometimes get to a bigger city and then can buy other types.
Where Do You Acquire the Yarns?
Mostly at walMart, sometimes at Hobby Lobby
Amy Solovay, Crochet Guide, says:
Beulah, thanks so much for sharing your inspiring story! What a creative thing to do! It is lovely and generous of you to offer your talents to breast cancer survivors.
I am sorry to hear about your mother's passing. That must have been very difficult for you. But, I am very glad you won the battle. You are an inspiration.
Did you know that About.com has a breast cancer forum? For anyone who is interested in crocheting for cancer patients, that could potentially be a good way to connect with people and share information.
