Clay mask without crochete yarn

Project Title and Brief Description

Mask made out of clay trimmed in crochette

Why Was This Your Best Project From 2012?

I love working with clay and have been taking a class at a center. I created a mask out of clay and decided to put holes around it hoping I could combine it with yarn by crocheting into the holes.. I wanted to combine my love of two completely separate medias and textures: one hard and one soft. I was quite happy with the results.

Lessons Learned

  • I loved doing this but I was a bit worried about BREAKING the mask as I crocheted around it.. The mask had some weight to it and IS breakable. So it was not as relaxing as just working with yarn alone. If you attempt something like this make sure you make the holes large enough for a crochete hook to get in.

To Ronni: This is really amazing! What a fantastic, and unique, mixed media piece. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Have you had a chance to explore the About.com pottery website? You have a lot in common with Beth Peterson, our former Guide to pottery at About.com. Beth is both an avid potter and an avid crocheter. Perhaps you'd enjoy reading about Beth's crocheted pottery -- which is totally different from yours, but it might still be interesting to you.

To Everyone: Have you ever created an interesting mixed media piece that includes crochet? If so, you are invited to share it. If it was one you crocheted in 2012, please submit it here! Otherwise, you could feel free to submit it to our freeform crochet projects gallery. We'd love to see what you have done. Other types of submissions are welcome as well.
