Any Organizational Advice You'd Give to New Crocheters?

I'm new.. so not sure my advice counts yet! I'm about 1 year into crocheting and needed to organize before it got too out of control. self imposed rule: i cannot buy any more yarn untill I use most of what i have already!

Explain What You Used to Organize Your Yarn / Thread

2 Cubby shelves with 6 canvas bins each (martha stewart brand at Home depot) in the corners of my closet. This gives me 12 bins. The bins keep yarn clean and away from light. Multiple skeins of same yarn are in zip-lock bags inside bin.

Then I have a big 3-Ring binder with patterns organized by yarn weight.

I print out patterns on the internet as I find them and organize into binder.

Magazines patterns I want to make are written in (simple reference to issue and year). Actual magazine issues are stored in smaller binders by year.

same with book patterns I want to make (simple reference in binder to book/page)

How Do You Sort Your Yarn?

Each bin is assigned by yarn weight (lace, sport, dk, ww, bulky, super bulky, novelty). Some weights have more than one bin because I have more of it (such as WW) and those bins are divided into acrylic or natural fiber.

When I want to make a project, I can either:

1. find yarn from the bin i want to work with, then look in binder for an appropriate pattern

2. Look in binder for pattern i want to make and easily find out if i have yarn to make it

What I'd Do Differently

  • do this from the beginning... it will take me a while to catch up on my pattern organization.
