How I Learned to Crochet With My Left Hand
I actually took a 4 hour class split into 2 days at Joann Fabrics. The older gal who taught the class was not that great and when I explained to her I was a leftie she looked at me like I had just asked her to teach the class in the nude. I struggled through the class because she had no idea how to teach me nor did the book we were to buy for the class have anything for lefties. I went home determined to crochet. My 2 bff's who went with me were whipping out scarves and blankets and here I was still trying to figure things out. Eventually one day i managed to get the hang of it. sigh
How I Hold My Crochet Hook and Yarn / Thread
I hold the hook in my left hand and the yarn in my right. I know the hook should remain fairly still and you work the yarn, or at least that's what the gal who tried to teach me said. But never the less, I hold and work the hook with my left hand and the yarn remains pretty stationary in my right. I'm fairly certain I self-taught myself wrong but it works. I have yet to learn beyond scarves and things of a straight nature but one day i hope to make something spectacular and be able to decipher a pattern!!
Advice
- Be patient!! Search the internet for leftie tutorials. You will eventually get the hang of it. I love to crochet, all my friends and family lovingly wear things i have made over the years!!

Barbie, that must have been such a frustrating experience for you! :(
In my opinion, you didn't teach yourself "wrong" though - if it works, I think you are doing it right. :) There isn't any single "right" way of crocheting. Everyone crochets a little differently, and there are multiple variations of "correct" when it comes to crochet. I am really glad you found a way that works for you, and I hope that other beginners, especially lefties, will learn from your experiences and advice. Thanks for sharing your story.
